| These notes were compiled during the style evaluation of the Past Pages web site. They hope to explain the presentation and style variaitions of web sites in general. Most professional sites are designed by young males with good eyesight and active brains. They assume that all worthwhile users of web sites are youthful with good eyesight and active brains. This is not always the case. Some have poor to bad sight, and not-so-active brains. The current fashion for web design is to follow these practices: Use a small sans-serif font (such as Arial or Verdana) Use low contrast (beige text on a light brown background is very cool). Set a congested and busy page. Getting as much 'content' onto a page is considered good practice. The tight fonts such as Arial enable more 'content' per line, and as such are very popular. Several studies have shown that: Serifed fonts (such as Times New Roman) are easier to read than sans-serf fonts. ( This does not apply when the font size is reduced to the absolute minimum. ) High contrast colours are easier and faster to register - it is not an accident that so many international companies (Shell, MacDonalds, Kodak,...) use the Red-Yellow colour combination. Uncrowded pages are easier to navigate (common sense, that one!) A good web site should have the following design considerations: Not all visitors are youths with good eyesight and turbo charged brains. Many users are now in their 60s, 70s and 80s. Consideration should be given to ease of reading and clarity of page layout. Unfortunately, with a lot of web designers these considerations are sidelined in favour of the the current fashionable styles. Adopting a more flexible approach to clarity would be seen as 'nerdy' or 'amateurish' to their peers. A web site featuring specialist antiques is more likely to appeal to middle aged and elderly users, and as such should be designed for ultimate clarity and ease of navigation. One of the best sites for flexibility is www.bbc.co.uk with its Display Setting options. Users will quickly abandon a web site if clarity and navigation are poor. For a business this means loss of customers and loss of sales. |
